How to choose the perfect bed for your pet?

Before we start thinking about what kind of bedding we should provide for our friend, we must realise that every dog is different and their preferences and needs are also very different.

What should we consider when choosing the "perfect" bed?

Let's start with the size!

A comfortable bed is one in which the dog can fit completely and has some freedom of movement. It is customary to measure your dog from the top of its head to the base of its tail (not the tail end), but it is advisable to add 20/30 cm to this so that your friend can stretch out all its limbs without having to keep them outside the bed.

Is it a good idea to buy a bed for a puppy "just in time" with his target dimensions in mind?
Not in our opinion! Why not? Because it robs them of the sense of security and comfort which a suitably sized bed guarantees. Let's remember not to go to extremes and not to let our friend lie in a bed which is too small. It should be meticulously replaced along with your dog's growth and development.

Seeing is not seeing - what type of bed is best?

It goes without saying that you should observe your pet. As mentioned above, every dog has its own preferences. We will quickly find out whether he likes to sleep on hard surfaces such as the floor or whether his first choice is always the sofa. This knowledge will help us to buy the right kind of bedding.

In a separate thread, it's worth mentioning orthopedic mattresses, which are especially useful for older dogs, affected by arthritis or spine degeneration. They are most often made of special foam which adapts to the shape of your pet's body and decompresses the skeletal system, allowing you to rest without discomfort.

It is good that the mattress does not lie directly on the ground.

What else should you pay attention to?

The inside! The filling of the bed is a very important consideration.

Most manufacturers - including Oh Charlie - use silicone balls, which are suitable for allergy sufferers and are easy to keep clean and machine washable.

Now that we have our personalised bed, there is one last thing to consider - where to place it?

It's easy to see that your pet doesn't always feel like spending time with people. So it is worth providing him with
an oasis in a quiet place in the house, away from the noise and the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The bed should be placed far away from passageways, such as corridors or halls, but also close enough to the household members so that the pet doesn't feel lonely. Dogs like to know what's going on in the house and keep an eye on their owners, so placing the bed in a separate room is not a good idea either.
